Big UAE team for Bahrain Jumping Championship

A huge contingent of UAE show jumpers are heading to Bahrain to take part in the His Majesty The King's Cup Show Jumping Championship, which will be held in Bahrain from February 21 to 23, 2007. The CSI-W event, to be held at Police Mounted Centre, Budaiya, is the FEI World Cup Jumping Qualifier for Arab League. The Championship is being organized by the Bahrain Royal Equestrian and Endurance Federation.

The UAE show jumpers include Sheikh Majid Abdullah Al Qassimi, Sheikh Shakboot Al Nahyan, Sheikh Ali Abdullah Al Qassimi, Ahmed Ameen, Mohammed Al Owais, Abdullah Humaid Al Muhairi, Mohammed Al Kumaiti, Rashid Ahmed Al Hosani, Salim Ahmed Al Suwaidi, Salim Khamis Al Suwaidi, Mohammed Ghanim Al Hajri, Ahmed Rashid Al Suwaidi, Ahmed Nabeel Falaknaz,

Saif Mohameed Al Rumaithi, Saif Omar Thabit, Abdul Rahman Al Habsi, Mohammed Yousif Al Nowais, Hamad Ali A Kirbi, Abdul Rahman Al Ka'abi and Ali Abdullah Al Kumaiti.

Though the Championship officially invites only six foreign riders and 12 horses per Federation, extra riders are being invited at their own expenses. However, each horse may participate in only one competition per day.

The three-day competitions in Bahrain also include other categories of show jumping including Qualifying Competition for the FEI World Cup Jumping Competitions, One Round with Jump-off, One round with Jump-Off Against the Clock, International Speed Class and Accumulator with Joker. The jumper who qualifies in the FEI World Cup Jumping Competition will vie in the final championship to be held later this year in Las Vegas.

The UAE team is accompanied by Lt. Col Ronnie MacMahon, Technical Advisor, Show Jumping Department, UAE Equestrian and Racing Federation, and trainers Mr. Christopher Richez from Abu Dhabi Equestrian Club and Mr. Atif Shawky from the Sharjah Equestrian Club.

Sheikha Latifa tops in another category

Mohammed Abdullah Al Kumaiti continues to savour success with yet another superb performance at the week-end Show Jumping competitions held at the Sharjah Equestrian and Racing Centre premises. Riding Al Mutawakel, Al Kumaiti, from the Ajman Equestrian Centre, cleared the rounds ahead of others in Class 8: A1 (One Round with Jump off ) in 34.09 seconds with no faults.

Second place in the category went to Arif Ahmed from Emirates Equestrian Centre, who cleared the rounds in 37.26 seconds riding Enzo with no faults. Sheikha Latifa Al Maktoum, also from Emirates Equestrian Centre, followed him to the third place clearing the rounds in 40.74 seconds riding Kalaska De Semilly with four faults.

However in Class 4: A2 (One Round Against the Clock), category, Sheikha Latifa Al Maktoum beat all others to clinch the first place. Riding Cover's Pride, Sheikha Latifa cleared the rounds in 69.04 seconds.

The competitions were jointly organized by the UAE Equestrian and Racing Federation and Sharjah Equestrian Club.

HRH Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein to Attend Federation forum on medication

The UAE Equestrian and Racing Federation, in conjunction with the Federation Equestre Internationale, FEI, is organizing an International Forum on Medication Control on Wednesday, February 14, 2007. The one-day forum, to be held at The Fairmont Hotel, Dubai, will be graced by HRH Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, President of FEI and wife of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
The Forum is being held ahead of the prestigious endurance cup, viz.,

The Forum, to be held at the Barajeel Ballroom, will commence at 12 noon.

Dr. James Bryant, Head of the Veterinary Department at the UAE Equestrian and Racing Federation and the Coordinator of the Forum, said: "The main objective of the meeting is to discuss and educate the participants with specific topics relevant to the FEI equine anti-doping and medication control rules, prohibited list of drugs, protocol of collection and testing, analysis of samples and various related developments. The purpose of the meeting is to assist all members in preventing any problems with medication control."

Six senior and experienced officials from the FEI, the international authority on equestrian sports with its headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland, are participating in the Forum and will talk on various medication-related subjects. "The Forum is also likely to attract a huge number of veterinarians, officials, riders, owners and trainers, from the UAE and other GCC countries," Dr. Bryant added.

" He further added that the country is certainly proud to have hosted two World Endurance Championships in 1998 and 2005. Ho hoped that the outcome of the meeting will help all members reap some benefits.

The speakers who are taking part in the Forum include:

1. Mr. Michael Stone, Secretary General, FEI: Introduction to the Forum
2. Mr. Ian Williams, Manager, Endurance Department, FEI: Rules Governing FEI events
3. Mr. Alexander Mc Lin, Legal Department, FEI: Legal ramifications for positive test
4. Dr. Fritz Sluyter, Head, Veterinary Department, FEI: Scope of the problem, Forms, Responsibilities of Person Responsible and Therapeutic use forms and medication authorization.
5. Dr. Andrew Higgins, Chairman, FEI Medication Sub Committee: MCP testing: How does it work
6. Prof. Frans DelBeke, Director, Doping Control Laboratory, University of Ghent, Belgium: Laboratory responsibilities and procedures.

Mr. Peter Albert, Chief Analyst, Equine Forensic Unit, Central Veterinary Research Laboratory, CVRL, Dubai, will also be present to answer any medication-related queries.

Other topics that may come under discussion include laboratory responsibilities and procedures, causes of positive tests, avoidance of positive tests, legal ramifications for positive test. The forum will conclude with a panel discussion and question and answer session.

Hussein Mohammed Hussein, Secretary General, UAE Equestrian Federation, stated that it was indeed a great honour for the Federation to be associated with the FEI in organizing an International Forum on Medication, which is the need of the hour. "A Forum of this kind is very essential to discard several myths related to doping and medication and related issues. Since the Forum is bringing together several international experts from different medication-related issues, it will certainly help clear several misunderstandings on the issues", he said. Mohammed Hussein also thanked His Excellency Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Federation, who paved way for organizing the seminar.
