Show jumping begins In Ajman on Thursday

After an eventful show jumping season during 2006-2007, the show jumping activities for the current season will kick off in Ajman on Thursday, October 4, 2007. Show jumping is organized in the country by the UAE Equestrian and Racing Federation.

Thursday's competitions will be held at the Ajman Equestrian Club and will feature four events including Clear Round Jumping with Style (Class 1.D), Clear Round Jumping with Style (Class 2, C2, B3), Clear Round Jumping with Style for A3 (Class 3, A3, B2) and Two Phases with Time (Class 4, A2).

The officials for the competitions include Ms. Lisa Hareb, Jury President, Khalil Ibrahim and Ms. Christine Grouber, judges, Ali Mujaher, NF Steward and Youssif Al Mahmoudi, Course Designer.

It is noteworthy to mention here that the 2006-2007 witnessed several milestones in the show jumping discipline with the UAE show jumpers taking part in several international competitions and coming out with flying colours.

One of the most noteworthy achievements of the season was the qualification of UAE show jumper Sheikha Latifa Al Maktoum for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. She put up a good performance in the Jump-Off at the Seventh Qatar International Show Jumping Championship held in Doha, Qatar, in March, to qualify for the Olympics.

The UAE show jumpers also grabbed the third place and won the Bronze at the 15th Asian Games which was held in Doha, Qatar, in December, 2006. The five-member UAE team comprised Sheikha Latifa Al Maktoum, Abdullah Mohammed Al Marri, Abdullah Humaid Al Muhairi, Mohammed Rashid Al Suwaidi and Mohammed Al Kumaiti. This was first major international exposure for this young team of jumpers from the UAE and considering that they had to contend with more experienced jumpers from countries like Saudi Arabia and Korea, it is indeed a laudable effort.

In October 2006, UAE show jumper Sheikh Ali bin Abdullah Al Qassimi who had qualified for the final of the Federation Equestre Internationale, FEI, Children's International Competition from Group VII, travelled to Spruce Meadows, Calgary, Alberta, Canada to take part in the final event for youngsters. He was the only UAE show jumper in Category A to qualify for this event which was held in October 2006 in the UAE. At Calgary event, the young lad won the Style Award at this international event riding Magic Man.

The UAE riders Mohammed Ghanim Al Hajri and Ahmed Ameen also did a great job to clinch the second and third places respectively at His Majesty the King's Cup Show Jumping Championship which was held in February 2007 at Bahrain. The CSI-W event organised by the Bahrain Royal Equestrian and Endurance Federation and was the FEI World Cup Jumping Qualifier for Arab League. A huge contingent of UAE jumpers also traveled to Syria to participate in the Arab League Qualifier.

Due to the encouragement given by the Chairman of the UAE Equestrian and Racing Federation His Excellency Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, the sport is attracting more and more young national riders, both male and female. Particularly, this season witnessed good participation from young lady jumpers. The Equestrian Federation has also put into motion a long-term training plan for the UAE jumpers. Several riders attend show jumping training camps in the UAE as often as it is necessary, while many others are encouraged and sent abroad to undergo focused training under guidance and tutelage from international experts.

The current season will witness several competitions staged in different parts of the UAE including Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah.
