Sheikha Alyazia wins Round II Al Asayl Endurance Championship

Sheikha Alyazia bint Sultan Al Nahyan won the Round II of the three-round Al Asayl Ladies Championship Endurance Series, which was held on Friday, February 9, 2007 at the Al Asayl Endurance Centre, Sweihan, Abu Dhabi. Riding 10-year-old Arab, bay Mare Ningadoo Moesha, from the Al Reef Stables, Sheikha Alyazia completed the 80-km ride in 3 hours, 15 minutes and 19 seconds riding on an average speed of 24.58 kmph.

The FEI, CEI Two-star Round II, which was run in three phases of 30km, 30km and 20 km respectively, was flagged off early in the morning with 20 enthusiastic young ladies of whom 13 riders successfully finished the ride.

The Round II endurance ride, jointly organized by The UAE Equestrian and Racing Federation and the Al Asayl Endurance Centre, is part of the Three-round Al Asayl Endurance Championship, the first of which was held on January 19, 2007.

The Round III, which is the culmination of the Series, will be held on March 9, after which, based on a point system, the Ladies Endurance Champion will be declared.

All the rides are being held under the patronage of His Excellency Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the UAE Equestrian Federation.

For Sheikha Alyazia, who is the Manager of the Al Asayl Endurance Centre, this was a real moment of glory as she had decided to retire from Round I at Gate II keeping the welfare of her horse in mind. With a good and efficient planning and sharing a brilliant rapport with her horse Ningadoo, Sheikha Alyazia finished the first loop of 30 km in one hour, 16 minutes and 53 seconds riding on an average speed of 23.41 kmph. She finished the next two loops ahead of others.

Second place in the ride went to Afra Khalifa Al Suwaidi who partnered 12-year-old Jen A Dale Zamarah, a chestnut mare also from Al Reef Stables. She finished the ride in 3 hours, 15 minutes and 20 seconds, just a second behind Sheikha Alyazia, and rode on an average speed of 24.57 kmph.

Sheikha Madiya Hasher Mana Al Maktoum finished third riding Huzie D Ax, 12-year-old grey mare from Emirates Stables. She clocked 3 hours, 21 minutes and 57 seconds and her average speed registered was 23.77 kmph. Sheikha Madiya was a bundle of happiness as in Round I, though she completed the ride in the first place, she could not collect her trophy as her horse was found to be lame.

9. Sheikha Hissa bint Sultan Al Nahyan: Salashil, 3 hours, 57 minutes, 44 seconds, 20.19 kmph
10. Martha Mary Misheff: Al Lughez, 3 hours, 57 minutes, 46 seconds, 20.19 kmph
11. Reem Shaban Ibrahim Hasan: Jonah, 4 hours, 10 minutes, 11 seconds, 19.19 kmph 12. Nicola West: Norma Jean, 4 hours, 36 minutes, 16 seconds, 17.37 kemp
13. Johanna Catherine Fourie: Desert Fox Sniper, 5 hours, three minutes, 52 seconds, 15.80 kmph.

An amount of Dh 111,000 will be awarded to the top five point holders at the completion of all the three rounds. The rider with the highest number of points at the end o f the third ride will get Dh. 37,000. The next four winners will get Dh. 29,500, Dh 22,000, Dh. 15,000 and Dh 7,500, respectively.

Apart from this a purse of Dh 37,000 has bee allocated for each round which will be distributed among first five finishers. The first finisher will receive Dh 11,000, and the next four will get Dh. 8,500, Dh 6,000, Dh 4,000 and Dh 4,500 respectively. Best Conditioned Horse will receive a prize of Dh 4,500.

Round II Al Asayl Endurance Championship for Ladies
on Feb. 9

The UAE Equestrian and Racing Federation, in cooperation with the Al Asayl Endurance Centre, is organizing the Round II of the three-round Al Asayl Ladies Championship Endurance Series, on Friday, February 9, 2007 at the Al Asayl Endurance Centre, Sweihan, Abu Dhabi.

The FEI, CEI Two-star Round II will be run in three phases of 30km, 30km and 20 km respectively and will begin at the Endurance Centre at 6 am. Over 25 lady endurance riders have confirmed their participation for this second ride, the first of which was held January 19, 2007. The Round III, which is the culmination of the Series, will be held on March 9, which will declare the Ladies Endurance Champion.

All the rides are held under the patronage of His Excellency Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the UAE Equestrian Federation.

The Round I featured 30 riders of whom 13 ladies successfully completed the distance.

The lady riders who will be taking part in the Round II competition include Sheikha Alyazia bint Sultan Al Nahyan, Sheikha Hassa bint Sultan Al Nahyan, Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan Al Nahyan, Sheikha Maryam bint Omeir Al Qassimi (who finished first in Round I), Sheikha Madiya Hasher Mana Al Maktoum, Maria Alvarez Ponton (finished second in the first round), Layla Andul Aziz Al Redha (finished third in first round), Carmen Romer, Ceinwen Morgan, Shamsah Awad Al Otaiba, Martha Mary Misheff, Leila Arsamekova, Nicola West, Afra Khalifa AL Suwaidi, Bayan Abdullah Abbas Ahmed, Reem Shaban Ibrahim Al Hasan, Khasiba Waleed Al Amri, Brenda Cooke, Nadia Mansour Loudouna, Asia Salih, Mari Galliou, Karine and Nelly Peron

Group 7 meeting In Abu Dhabi on Thursday
Several equestrian topics to be discussed

The UAE Equestrian and Racing Federation is hosting the Second Annual Geographical Group VII meeting in Abu Dhabi on Thursday, January 25, 2007.

The meeting, to be held under the presence of the FEI President HRH Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, and under the patronage of His Excellency Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the UAE Equestrian and Racing Federation, will begin at 10 a.m at Emirates Palace Hotel, Hall M 31, Abu Dhabi.

The Group VII, which is currently being headed by Chairman, Sheikh Khalid Bin Abdullah Al Khalifa of Bahrain, comprises 17 members including Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Qatar, Tunisia and the UAE.

However the countries which will be attending the meeting in Abu Dhabi include Bahrain, Palestine, Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, Syria, Saudi Arabia, apart from the hosts the UAE.

His Excellency Dr. Sheikh Sultan said that the UAE Federation supports the Group VII initiatives and as such happy to host the second meeting. "The meeting offers a good platform to debate how to raise the standard of equestrianism in the region and also set certain targets to enhance the growth of this sport.

" He further added that the country is certainly proud to have hosted two World Endurance Championships in 1998 and 2005. Ho hoped that the outcome of the meeting will help all members reap some benefits.

The UAE has prepared a four-point agenda to be discussed at the meeting.

They are:
1. Possibilities of organizing an Endurance championship for Arab League members
2. Drawing up a broad plan to develop and improve Eventing and Dressage in the region
3. The Group VII to study the full report prepared by the UAE regarding and import and export of horses
4. Possibilities of organising show jumping championships for Juniors and Young Riders at the Middle East region.

Hussein Mohammed Hussein, Secretary General of the UAE Equestrian and Racing Federation said that there is a vast scope for improvement and development in equestrian discipline in the region. "It is a welcome step to hold such meetings annually and the outcome of which would enable proper implementation of decisions."

Sheikha Maryam wins Al Masaood Jewellery Endurance Cup

Sheikha Maryam bint Omer Al Qassimi rode to a thumping victory in the 80-km FEI CEI Two-star Al Masaood Jewellery Endurance Cup held on Friday, January 19, 2007 at the Al Asayel Endurance Centre, Sweihan, Abu Dhabi. She finished the ride in a timing of 3 hours 28 minutes and 45 seconds riding on an average speed of 22.99 kmph. The ride was part of the three-round Asayl Ladies Championship.

Sheikha Maryam partnered 10-year-old Anglo Arab Grey Gelding Kalkadoon Kampala, owned by Sheikh Faisal bin Saqr Al Qassimi.

Though Sheikha Madiya Hasher Manan Al Maktoum crossed the finish line first, her horse Huzie D Ax was eliminated after the final vet check. As many as 31 ladies had a mass start at 6. 30 am and 13 of them completed the ride.

Second place went to Spanish rider Maria Alvarez Ponton who rode 11-year-old Grey Gelding Agecroft Jos on an average speed of 22.90 kmph to complete the distance in three hours, 29 minutes and 35 seconds. Third place went to Layla Abdul Aziz Al Radha who rode Darling Du Couderc and took a time of 3 hours, 56 minutes and 31 seconds and rode on an average speed of 20.29 kmph.

The ride was attended by Sheikha Hassa bint Mohammed Al Nahyan, mother of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Sheikha bint Saif Al Nahyan, wife of His Excellency Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the UAE Equestrian and Racing Federation, who gave away the prizes and the trophies to the winning ladies said: "I am very pleased to see all the young girls coming together and participating in the endurance ride in one arena. We like to encourage young ladies to train themselves in endurance and expect larger participation in the future." She thanked Dr. Sheikh Sultan for his continuous guidance and support for the young ladies.

Sheikha Alyazia bint Sultan al Nahyan, Manager of the Al Asayl Endurance Centre, which organized the ride in cooperation with the UAE Equestrian Federation, said: "This is good beginning for the Emirati lady riders who sometimes find it difficult to ride along with men. There were lot of requests from young lady riders for a separate ride just for women and Al Asayl decided to organize this three round championship. We hope to get more participants for the future rides."

Sheikha Alyazia who also rode in the championship decided to retire at Gate 2 keeping "the health of the horse in mind." However she was quite happy that her sister Sheikh Hissa bint Sultan al Nahyan finished in the fourth place. She said they are looking forward to organize rides in bigger scale and are open to suggestions.

A beaming and excited Sheikha Maryam who finished in the first place said that though she had been riding for the last seven years she had never taken part in a championship ride. "When I started off today, I was confident of finishing in the first place but had doubts." Her happiness was double fold as her sister Sheikha Hissa bint Omer Al Qassimi had also successfully completed the ride in the eighth place. She said the course was very rough and challenging and posed a real endurance test for the riders and the horses. Sheikha Maryam has taken a temporary break from studies at HCT to manage Dahaisa Stables in Ras Al Khaimah.

Layla Abdul Aziz Al Redha is not new to endurance riding. She has participated in several international championships with good success rate. She said she took part in the Al Asayl Championship for the 'beautiful experience it provided."

The day also witnessed 40-km Federation Qualifier in which six riders out of ten participants qualified. Those qualified include:

The Al Asayl Ladies Endurance Championship Round 2 and Round 3 are scheduled to be held on February 9 and March 9, 2007 respectively, at the end of which the Ladies Champion will be selected based on a point system.
