Afra is overall Ladies Champion: Shamsha wins Round III


Shamsah Awad Al Otaiba won the third and the final round of His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan Challenge endurance ride for ladies while Afra Khalifa Al Suwaidi finished fourth on Waterlea Tuppence to win the overall championship. The ride was held on Friday, March 7, 2008, at the Al Asayel Endurance Village, Sweihan, Abu Dhabi, and 20 lady riders took part in this final round, out of whom seven ladies completed the distance. Afra won a car worth Dh 150,000.

Shamsah was riding grey gelding Yarandoo Jakara Silver owned by of His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan and completed the 100-km ride in three hours, 49 minutes and 10 seconds riding on an average speed of 26.18 kmph.

Second place went to Reem Shaban Ibrahim Hasan who was riding 10-year-old bay gelding A Al Galahn from Al Reef Stables. Maintaining an average speed of 25.88 kmph, Reem finished the round in three hours, 51 minutes and 51 seconds. Third place was clinched by Dana Ahmed Al Mansoori who was astride 12-year-old chestnut mare Miss Saigon from Al Reef Stables and finished the distance in four hours, eight minutes and 42 seconds with an average speed of 24.13 kmph. Second Round winner Sue Sidebottom was eliminated at Gate 3 for lameness.

Others who completed the ride included Kayleigh Smith, Sheikha Hissa bint Sultan Al Nahyan and Sheikha Najla bint Salman Al Khalifa.
