German horse wins UAE
President’s Cup in Sweden

The President of the UAE Challenge Derby for Pure-bred Arabian horses kick started for the season with the inaugural race at Jagersro Racing Club in Sweden on Sunday, May 18, 2008. The race, sponsored by the UAE Equestrian and Racing Federation, was run over a distance of 1,730 metres on dirt track and offered prize money of 14,000 Euros.

German-bred Mythos, ridden brilliantly by Fredrick Johansson, beat 15 other competitors in land the first place with ease. Mythos settled on the lead very well despite starting from the 11th stall and having to be rushed into the first turn. Jockey Frederick said: “I rested him down the backstretch and waited for a challenge. When the challenge came from Mistral Del Sol (FR) he ran on again and refused to lose". Mythos is owned by Ms A. Nabben and trained by Mr. Jan P.H. Pubben.

French-bred Mistral Del Sol, ridden by M. Santos finished in the second place. Mistral is owned by G.J.F Nibbering and trained by Ms Karin R. van den Bos.

Ms Bos said: "We travelled eight hours from Holland for the race and he ran well, his first start since August last year. I thought he had just got up but we just missed. Thanks to the UAE Equestrian & Racing Federation for their continued support here in Scandinavia. The sponsorship really does make a difference to everyone here and helps us to interest other sponsors in the sport".

Another German-bred horse Marvin El Samawi ridden by Piotr Piatkowski and trained by Ms. Regine Weissmeier, finished third.

Mats Genberg, Chairman, Scandinavian Arabian Racing Association affiliate of The Swedish Jockey Club, said: “We had 14 runners from five countries including Holland, Sweden, Germany, Poland and Belgium, and also a Russian horse. This shows the support and respect the horseman have for the races sponsored by the UAE Equestrian & Racing Federation. The UAE races throughout Europe are the goal for many stables as the sponsorship has been continued over many years and the races are the major races here annually. The owners and trainers know that the UAE is their solid partner promoting Arabian racing worldwide"

Mohammed Essa Al Adhab, Chairman of the UAE Racing Committee under the UAE Equestrian Federation, attended the races and distributed prizes. Other dignitaries included UAE Consul General in Stockholm Saeed Alqamzi. As many as 5,000 fans attended the races on sunny but breezy day.
